Hail Good People,
Many folk have offered kind words for posts that keep them 'in the loop,' so
I write now with sharing in mind, on multiple topics.
Caieth and I just returned from Crown Council in Seattle, and we had useful
meetings with the Kingdom's other Barons and Baronesses, with discussion on
varied concerns and approaches, from not enough new recruits to too many new
recruits, to inculturating newbies (there seemed to be some large concerns
that Pirate culture was overtaking the larger SCA...), to not allowing
workhorses to work themselves to death, and more... I was glad of the opportunity to
go, and to represent the Inlands. Thanks to Gernut, Braithe, Malachi, and
Aodhan for accompanying us and participating in the King's War Moot.
I spent today re-writing the Sergeantry Trials Packet. I want to thank
again all the members of the Sergeantry who attended the meeting and offered
their thoughtful input. I apologize for the delay in taking your ideas to final
printed copy, but it took me more than seven hours today, and with all the
events we have been attending, I simply had not had the time until now. For
those of you familiar with the seventy-plus page document, the major changes
include streamlining the heraldry requirements, adding large historical and
cultural sections, changing "Court of Love" to an analysis of Virtue, and
re-aligning the sections on siege warfare and castle parts to have practical SCA
application for leaders and fight-o-crats, (rather than learning vocabulary
words in isolation). It separates some Courtier requirements from
Sergeant-at-Arms requirements. Those who have earned recognition as Sergeants must be
heartily applauded, for the tasks are many and varied.
Much of the information contained within the packet on SCA protocols and
rules would be useful for anyone in the Society, whether or not they were
interested in attempting the Trials. I will post this draft as soon as possible,
for the benefit of those considering taking up the challenge. Anyone who is
interested will find that I am happy to support their efforts in every way
that I can.
Wealdsmere will soon host our largest annual event, Celtic Revolt, at
Farragut, Friday through Monday over Memorial Day weekend. This event will also
encompass Newcomer's, and Baronial Champions, which were previously separate
events. Caieth is autocrat, and we are hip-deep in ambitious plans, including
Newcomers and Pied Piper activities, games and competitions, Arts and
Sciences classes and Ithra info, Champion's Tourneys for Heavy, Rapier, Archery,
A&S, and Bardic, a Saturday night 'the more the merrier' sit-down feast, and of
course, War scenarios. There are only two Baronial Council meetings left
prior to the event, so if you are a member of the populace with input to chime
in or volunteer time to offer, please come or email, and if you are an Officer
or otherwise have responsibilities to the group, please make sure you are on
top of things or are asking for help if you need it, and attend the meetings
please.
Baronial Council will meet next Tuesday, at 7:30, at Central Valley School
District's LTC, off Barker Road.
Fighter Practice will move to Wednesdays, perhaps starting next week,
assuming the snow is off the ground. I will happily leave that call to our Master
Of Stables, Sir Brandt.
A heads-up for Members of the Sergeantry: I am strongly considering
requiring that you compete in Wealdsmere's Champions Tournaments, in three out of
five categories for Sergeants-at-Arms and one out of two categories for
Sergeant Courtiers. As always, I would listen to individual considerations;
however, as highly skilled leaders in the region, I would hope you would be pleased
to participate.
Love,
Araviere
