Dearest Lily,
I find this back-and-forth fun, like a good old-fashioned debate, and I hope
you find it so as well. (If anyone out there is getting annoyed with me and
this request, please be assured it is not my intent; I know no-one likes to
be nudged out of their comfort zone. I just have complete confidence in your
skills and talents, and am requesting that you demonstrate your leadership
for the betterment of the Barony). I appreciate your wit and ability to
explain your thinking (and willingness to do so, whether it take five paragraphs
or seven LOL). Here are some responses:
When I decided to enter the Sergeant's Trials, I was dismayed to learn the
Wealdsmere offers areas only in heavy weaponry, rapier, archery and service.
In fact most baronies only offer these four. Very few offer a Sergent's
Trial in A&S. I would love to see this happen here.
Funny you should say that, because I just finished re-writing the Sergeantry
Trials Packet, and it now does include an A&S. It sort of did before, with
games, bardic and dancing all falling technically within the realm of the
arts, but all separate categories. I combined those sections and added created
arts or sciences (leather, metal, textile, ceramics, jewelry, etc....)
An important clarification is that the request I am making of Sergeants is
for Wealdsmere Champions competitions (held at Celtic, in May), not related to
the Trials (August). Therefore, the categories aren't heavy, rapier,
archery, service, but instead, heavy, rapier, archery, bardic, and A&S. I did not
choose the categories; however, I am not inclined to change them at this
time. Clearly, the SCA promotes and rewards three pillars of participation:
arms (whether heavy, light, or archery), arts (including bardic arts), and
service. All three are equal roads to Peerage. So perhaps at some point we
should consider a Champion in the service category. A potential tricky part is
many people who serve would be appalled at the idea of competing with each
other or being rewarded for it. Recognition or gratitude is sometimes more than
enough. But that is a digression, not purposeful here. So, when I said the
choice for Courtiers seemed to me to be either Bardic or A&S, it was because
out of the five Champions categories, they were the non-martial ones. I am
not implying Courtiers are headed more toward Laurels than Pelicans.
You are right on another point you made: an entry should not just be
something half-hearted, but done with care and purpose. I suppose I was trying to
give you an easy out because I know you have made many beautiful things, and
have talents in many areas (sorry, not Japanese painting, but corded
knotwork? I can't remember the name...), and I don't think it is necessary to only
enter something brand new that you must start today. I think you can choose
something you have made or are making, that has inspired you, and write the
documentation that says where you got the idea, what methods you used, how did
that go, what did you learn from the process, etc. The purpose for an A&S
competition and display at Celtic is not only Laurel-level showcase talent, but
for Newcomers and all comers as well to see what people in our area can do,
are doing, to get ideas of skills to learn and try, and contacts for folk who
are likewise interested. Wealdsmere has many amazing artisans, including
all of the Sergeantry, but many don't consider what they are doing as anything
special, and are just doing it on their own. I hope to build our Barony's
strength in the area of A&S by helping people become more aware of what others
are doing, and sharing our knowledge.
Thank you for your kind invitation to Friday's shop night. I had fun last
time I went. Caieth came without me last Fri. eve to work on Baronial
pavilion tent stakes - I didn't make it cause we have been swamped with projects
(woodwork, sewing, painting, you name it), but I will see you tonight at the
Canton meeting, and will try to make some future Fridays.
Love,
Araviere
Gentle Araviere,
Well you know me. I can be quite loquacious, so five paragraphs is quite
short for me to describe any 'small problem!" LOL!
I whole heartedly agree that Sergeants should be visible leaders within the
SCA. I am slightly confused as to why a Courtier's natural choice would be
A&S, or even bardic. When I decided to enter the Sergeant's Trials, I was
dismayed to learn the Wealdsmere offers areas only in heavy weaponry, rapier,
archery and service. In fact most baronies only offer these four. Very few
offer a Sergent's Trial in A&S. I would love to see this happen here. I guess
then I would feel the need (in my copious free time - ;) ) to pursue that
one as well. Meanwhile I am in it for service, which is fine as I have spent
the last 18 years serving the SCA in whatever way they needed and I was able
to provide. I would say that at heart I am 60% about A&S and 40% about
service, so it is a close thing to begin with.
This is not to say that Courtiers in general are not into A&S. But my brain
likes everything to be organized in neat little slots. So if a Sergeant
should enter the heavies lists, and a Gallant should enter the rapier lists and
a Yeoman should enter the archery lists, a courtier should be competing in
.....service. (Ye gads - please don't think I actually feel there should be a
competition in service. LOL!) I know I am nit-picking and I am actually not
trying to do so. I am simply seeking clarification. When I put in my
letter of intent to enter the Sergeant's Trials, I felt I was entering into a
contract with the current and all future baronesses of Wealdsmere. This was a
contract of service.
Yes it is obvious I can type. LOL! After spending 7 1/2 years pursuing my
BA in history, I have typed more than a few papers. But I really don't wish
to simply fling something onto a table just to have an entry. When I do
research and create something, I put a piece of my soul into it. In the past I
put things into displays that were done just to enter something and it leaves
sour taste in myself, because it does not best represent me or my talents.
It is often hard for me to pick one thing to do, I must agree there. But I
have a very short attention span so many things take me a loooong time to
complete.
Thank you for the compliment that I am talented in many areas. Once again I
blame the short attention span. I learn something new, become more than
proficient at it, get bored and move onto the next new thing. Although I must
admit that I can't claim the Japanese painting as a skill. I don't do
anything requiring me to hold objects like paint brushes or pens due to the
arthritis in my hands. I think Sessidi does the painting.
Please do come to Friday night A&S, even if it is just to kick back and
chat. You are always welcome! We have finally completed the first of the
brooches and are soon to cast more to see if we can improve the process.
IS,
Lily

Dearest Lily,
I have to laugh a little, at your "small problem" which took five paragraphs
to outline. Cute!
Thank you for sharing your concerns; I understand that you have many
responsibilities and needs for your time.
It is appropriate, on so many levels, that Sergeants are visible leaders of
our Barony, in multiple areas.
I would think that Courtiers' natural entry choice would be A&S (although
some may choose Bardic). You do not have to compete to win the Champion title
to satisfy me, only participate. I have been in discussion with our A&S
officers as well as Elaine de Parfondeval, and plans include various entries and
judgement parameters, with multiple prizes. Simple entry does not require
documentation (although it is obvious you can type! lol) Keep in mind this
event also encompasses Newcomers, and is the Barony's largest annual event, and
I have intense interest in building A&S capacity and interest in our area.
I have already arranged Ithra representation, at least five classes so far,
and various make-and-take hands-on opportunities to dabble. Please,
considering adding to the display something you have already made to share what can
be done, what is possible... (I have heard of your Japanese painting, and
Caieth tells me you are making beautiful brooches...) I know you are talented
in many artistic areas. I would think the harder part would be choosing one...
After Tuesday's Baronial meeting and discussion with Officers and Champions,
I will have more exact details available for you. Then we can talk, perhaps
at Canton meeting, or at Ian's Friday night thing...
No panicking allowed.
Love,
Araviere
P.S. The request extends to those able to attend, of course; unfortunately
there will always be some folks not present (several are out of state!) We
will always do our best to represent them with honour. I didn't really get
the equity part. It would be like me asking Sergeants to stand Court. Of
course I mean those present. Forgive me if I am missing something obvious
here...
