They have something similar here in Windhaven.  Once a year or so, they hold such an event and call it a Moot.  It is an all day thing including a potluck.  Not everything is SCA related/period.  The one I made it to included a history edition of trivial pursuit, and bocci ball.  The whole thing was fairly informal and a lot of fun.  It was aimed primarily at the local SCA group.  Local being a relative term.  Windhaven covers a large area...
